Thanks 4 the cache

Welcome to our site on Geocaching.
We have recently found this fantastic past time and like many others have caught the bug.

This is where you need a GPS and download coordinates to where like minded people from all over the world place items.
Some are called micro caches
note how small this one is, almost as small as the head of the pen. This only has a log book and nothing more. You would usually ensure you always take either a pen or pencil to enable you to sign the log once you find these.

Others are similar to this one
being bigger so that you can add some items for those wanting to swap items, the rule here is if you take something you must put something in to replace what you take. Generally this should be of the same value or greater.

In some caches there are what they call Geocoins
or travel bugs both of which usually have a mission attached to them, You can login to geocaching.com and look up with the unique tracking number the item has stamped on it.
You may take these items however you also need to help them on their mission and to NOT keep these for too long as they need to be passed on to other caches.
You also don't have to swap these for any other items so taking one without putting in an item is fine.

The best idea is to create an account on Geocaching.com these are free although for a small fee per year you can have better access to allot more information.

A basic Gpsr is fairly inexpensive and get's you going into this great past time. Good footwear is a must. Once you find your first one you will probably catch the bug!

Happy hunting

Feel free to ask questions, although I have just started myself in this I will endeavour to help as much as I can or at least point you in the right direction.

Geocaching Satellites Upgrade - 01 April 2010

The united international assembly of geocachers announced the update today of the satellites specifically allocated to geocaching. The removal of selective availability in May 2000 enabled the sport to develop by ensuring that the accuracy of the received GPS signal from the satellites was measured in metres rather than hundreds of metres.

Todays announcement utilses a little known application of Newton's law to add in a 4th dimension (time) to the positioning calculations. The Multidimensional Newton-Raphson for GPS upgrade ensures that as a GPS receiver is moved, the accuracy is improved. Previously, a cacher had to stand still to verify a fix. Now, the act of moving (GPS in hand) will improve the accuracy of the estimated position to within centimetres.

The immediate application for our sport is tremendous. No longer will we have to hunch furtively in the vicinity of a cache. A 'walk-by', a quick twirl, or even a wave of the hand is all that is required.

Due to its position near the International Date Line, New Zealand is the first Country in the World to receive the benefits of this upgrade. No adjustments to GPS receivers are necessary. Just get moving.

I have hidden another cache. This one is heavily cammo.
Should be interesting to see if anyone finds this easily.
